Porlock Vale’s Repair Café is off to a popular start having already held two repair cafes in the last two months.
The Repair Café is made up of a group of 14 skilled volunteers who so far have managed to repair 37 items for members of the public. One item that was transformed was a metal horse ornament which had a crack in the metal and was starting to look dull and tarnished – Joe Roake, one of the volunteers worked his magic by repairing the crack, reattaching the reins, and fixing it on a new wooden base to bring it back to life, leaving the owner ecstatic! Other items that have been fixed have been a jumper which had holes in both elbows which was repaired with patches making it as good as new, a 70-year-old teddy bear that had lost his squeak, a leaf blower, various appliances such as kettles and toasters and plenty of gardening tools have been sharpened so far.
Do you have something that you can no longer use because it needs repairing? Don’t buy a new one, bring it along to one of the next Repair Café’s. Porlock Vale’s Repair Café is being held every month moving around Porlock Vale. The next one will take place on Saturday 28th May from 10am until 12 noon at the Allerford Village Hall (Hare Park, Allerford, TA24 8HL).
- Saturday 28th May, 10am-12pm at Allerford Village Hall
- Saturday 2nd July, 10am-12pm at Wootton Courtenay Village Hall
- Saturday 30th July, 10am-12pm at Porlock Village Hall
So how does it work?
The Repair Café has a team of skilled volunteers who are giving their time to help repair the public’s belongings to save perfectly good items from ending up in landfill. The time taken to repair the item will be free; the team just ask for a voluntary donation to help keep the Repair Café going and a small charge may be required for items needed for the repair. There will also be refreshments on site for attendees to purchase drinks and cake whilst they wait!

Keen gardeners will be showing off their green-fingered talents as they take part in the annual Porlock Open Gardens Weekend.
This year’s event, which takes place on Saturday 21st May and Sunday 22nd May from 2-6pm, will give visitors the chance to explore gardens of all styles and sizes across the village.
There are many gardens open, all offering a chance for you to visit gardens which would not normally be open to the public.
This year is focused on Outer Porlock with gardens open along Bossington Lane, West Porlock and Porlock Weir.
There are a wonderful variety of gardens from large wild gardens and gardens featuring unusual trees and shrubs. You can also view terraced gardens, gardens with ponds, gardens with water features and gardens with stunning views over the sea and moorland.
Please do come along and see the gardens but also take time to visit the many unique shops, pubs and tearooms in Porlock.
Plants will be available for sale at the old School Building.
Proceeds from the event will go towards the running of Porlock Visitor Centre.
Weekend tickets cost £7.50 per person – sorry but no dogs are permitted – and are available from Porlock Visitor Centre, Gift and Candy and SPAR.

As you may be aware the Parish Council Elections are being held on 05th May 2022 at Porlock Village Hall.
Previously in the 2019 election a few of the candidates got together and produced a leaflet which listed the candidates standing for Election and provided a brief description of who they are and why they believe they can help their community. The leaflets were then distributed to all houses locally prior to election day. Plans are again in place to produce a leaflet noting some of the potential candidates, if you would like to stand for election and participate in the leaflet please contact the Lovelace Centre on email@example.com or 01643 863350. All submissions to be sent in by the 08th April 2022. Please note a small fee will be required for the production of the leaflet.
If you have any questions relating to the Election please contact the Clerk on firstname.lastname@example.org
